SACTWU WELCOMES RESUMPTION OF UIF COVID-19 TERS BENEFIT PAYMENTS
The COSATU-affiliated Southern African Clothing & Textile Workers\u2019 Union (SACTWU) welcomes the announcement of this morning by the Unemployment Insurance Fund (UIF) that COVID-19 TERS benefit payments will be resumed on Monday.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n
This is after a 2 week suspension of payments by the UIF, to effect corrections to weaknesses in its payments processes.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n
This resumption of payments is very important for tens of thousands of our members, to help to alleviate the severe hardships which the necessary but unexpected COVID-19 lockdown conditions have imposed on them.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n
We urge the UIF to prioritise the huge number of payment backlogs for the May and subsequent applications.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n
We also call for April under- and non-payments to be resolved as speedily as possible.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n
These backlogs and its non-payment have resulted in very serious shop floor instability, through no fault of employees nor employers.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n
In many instances, it had caused unprocedural industrial action which in some instances have resulted in the unacceptable consequential mass dismissals of workers.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n
In addition, the vulnerabilities of workers regarding this unacceptable state of affairs is being opportunistically exploited by some who only have the promotion of their self- and political interests at heart.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n
All workers now deserve to be paid their outstanding UIF COVID-19 TERS benefits as speedily as possible.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n
