SACTWU members on strike at Shakaland Hotel, in Durban<\/p>\n
On 17 December 2019, the COSATU- affiliated Southern African Clothing and Textile Workers\u2019 Union (SACTWU) commenced a protected strike at Shakaland Hotel in KwaZulu Natal. Our members are on strike for wage increases and annual bonuses.<\/p>\n
Before commencing with the strike, on 13 December 2019, SACTWU conducted a strike ballot, obtaining permission from members to proceed with strike action. 80% of the workers voted in favour of the strike.<\/p>\n
This morning 30 workers downed tools and are now fighting for their wage increase.<\/p>\n
The workers are demanding a R750 wage increase, which is a 14% increase. Another matter that the workers are fighting for is a 13th cheque. In the previous two year agreement, there was an agreement of a 3 weeks\u2019 annual bonus and members are demanding an extra week.<\/p>\n
After one round of negotiations the employer had not made any offers to the workers. This gives the impression that they are not negotiating with us in good faith. As a result of this we had declared a dispute and referred it to the Commission for Conciliation, Mediation and Arbitration (CCMA).<\/p>\n
We will support our members and will continue to fight for better rights for all workers.<\/p>\n
SACTWU members and workers all deserve a living wage!<\/p>\n
