SACTWU members on strike at Day Break Farm in Mpumalanga<\/p>\n
On 2 December 2019, the COSATU- affiliated Southern African Clothing and Textile Workers\u2019 Union (SACTWU) commenced a protected strike at Day Break Poultry Farm in Delmas in Mpumalanga. Our members are on strike for wage increases and annual bonuses.<\/p>\n
Before commencing with the strike, on 28 November 2019, SACTWU conducted a strike ballot, obtaining permission from members to proceed with strike action. Over 80% of the workers voted in favour of the strike.<\/p>\n
At 6am yesterday an estimate of 450 workers downed tools and are now fighting for their wage increase.<\/p>\n
The workers are demanding a 14% wage increase, but the employer is offering 9% . Another matter that the workers are fighting for is a 13th cheque.<\/p>\n
Negotiations started in September and after three rounds, negotiations were deadlocked. The matter then went to conciliation and still no consensus were reached.<\/p>\n
Wages at this company are very low, averaging R700 per week, paid fortnightly.<\/p>\n
We will support our members and will continue to fight for better rights for all workers.<\/p>\n
